Rome day 21 To 22
Sunday, November 13, 2011, 9:26 PM
Arrived at camping village Roma early noon... So we were given time at the panorama supermarket to do some groceries before our group lunch at the restaurant of the campsite... Bought some more fruits and drinking water... Then when we went back, everyone was already present at lunch... It was pasta as appetizer, then chicken chop with salad ended with a sour sherbet... All in all I think it was the nicest group lunch throughouta the entire trip... Then we were given rooms... We had a chalet and a smaller 2 bed cabin... We all squeezed into the one with 5 beds which is the chalet... Then gathered around 4.30pm to go for our walking tour of Rome... On the way there we lost the rest... So when we decided to give up, we managed to get hold of the tour guide who didn't even notice he lost us... we took to the right train station and walk to the colluseum where we met up with the rest... Wtf... Totally black faced when we saw the guide again... The local guide in Rome is a guy and he is really nice... He brought a picture book authored by another guide just to show us how the before and after of the colluseum and roman ruins looked... Really a nice touch.. Less imagination needed... Of course the colluseum was used for gladiator activites and due to the rain on the previous day, the train station as well as the colluseum was closed so we couldn't go inside but findings of chicken bones suggested gladiator fights were like soccer matches of the olden days though more brutal... The colluseum was built for the purposes of such fights... There were tickets sold even then and each entrance of the colluseum numbered... The highest being L which is gate 50 in roman numbers. Really fascinating architecture that allowed smooth traffic flow, with many underground rooms and seats for audiences. It is built with limestone and erosion ,where much is lost... We stood inside the perimeters of what used to be the whole colluseum and took some photos... Then walked to the roman ruins where the while empire started. There used to stand a church and other buildings with what is left with only boulders of stone... We proceeded to the national monument where suddenly from the back came a big group of people in masks dancing to music and they left soon enough but this scared the tour guide who was also taken by surprise and was worried it was another protest like what took place only days before we arrived... But luckily it was like a peaceful protest dunno for what purpose. So the guide explained the importance of the monument which I forgot.. Then we proceeded to the pantheon where it had reallynlarge marble pillars brought in from Egypt. The romans were crazy about Egyptians in the olden days and I am shocked at the manpower needed to bring in such big pillars... Anyway we went into the pantheon which had really good drainage system as it was open at the top... There buried the king and with his queen margarita where the margarita pizza's name came from... Also a famous artist whom I forgot who... Then Ko went to toilet and this time we bothered the expat guide whom stayed with us till ko got back... He even looked for a toilet for us. Brought us to the trevi fountain to meet up the rest.. We had gelato, was told one coin to go back to Rome, two to find love in Rome, three coins for a divorce and five coins to get rid of mother in law :) how useful.. I dropped a coin and we managed to take photos despite the large crowd.. Then was to our last stop for the guided tour which is the Spanish steps. He mentioned that the church above the Spanish steps was French so it was a bit unfair that it's called the Spanish steps... Then we were given free time for dinner... Found out that the local guide's name was ... Oops I forgot... But he was really a good guide, making sure everyone hears him and follows him... We ate pizza with Myzal and his mum and aunty... Then met back to travel back to our campsite... Ko was invited by the Mauritian to party at night and he went... I was not interested and too tired to join them...
We didn't follow the group to the Vatican museum, but went to a morning market where we bought second hand leather bags and my ring, then we went to the Vatican city and stopped by a restaurant where we had rabbit meat, turkey, chicken, roast beef and aglio oglio. Then to Vatican city the smallest country in the world. The queue to st peters basillica was way too long so we just walked around Vatican... I sent a postcard to myself from there and then we shopped a bit and left the place back to our campsite where we went to the supermarket again... Then was slacking away for the rest of the day... Where we had fruit and finished the rest of the food and beer. Scones made us have the runs the next day but it was quite mild... Slept after packing... |
